East Africa’s breaking community is set to converge in Kampala on 28–29 August as Uganda hosts the second edition of the Afro Break East Africa Qualifiers. Organized through a collaboration between Afro Break Academy ,Dance Nexus ,and Abalibawo Hip Hop Foundation, with support from SKillz Dance Fest, Dance Strikt, Kigali Breaking Festival and the wider global breaking and hip-hop community, the event marks another important milestone in the growth of breaking across the region.

The two-day championship will bring together breakers, dancers, judges, DJs, and hip-hop enthusiasts from across East Africa to compete for the opportunity to represent the region at the Afro Break Continental Championships in Accra, Ghana, later this year.

Beyond the regional qualifier, the event will feature B-Girl Battles, Kids Battles, All Style Battles, community exchanges, and the Ugandan screening of the acclaimed Roots Documentary, creating a weekend that celebrates both competition and culture.

For Uganda, hosting the regional qualifiers reflects the country’s growing contribution to the African breaking movement and demonstrates the strength of regional partnerships in advancing the culture.

“As Uganda, it’s a privilege to organize the second edition of the East Africa regional qualifiers here in Kampala. It demonstrates the power of collaboration and why working together is so relevant for the growth of breaking across the continent. This event is bigger than competition—it is about creating pathways for dancers, strengthening our communities, and ensuring East Africa has a strong voice on the continental stage.”

This year’s event is especially meaningful for the host community in Kawempe. Through Abalibawo Hip Hop Foundation, the neighborhood has become one of Uganda’s most active spaces for nurturing young breakers and using hip-hop as a tool for community development.

“I am humbled that Kawempe and Abalibawo Hip Hop Foundation are hosting this event in our community. It is a great opportunity to showcase the work we do at the foundation while welcoming dancers from across East Africa. Last year, I had the privilege of representing Uganda in Accra thanks to Afro Break Concepts. It was an incredible experience—not only competing as a B-Boy but also meeting people from different countries and learning from other communities. I encourage every breaker, dancer, and supporter to come through and be part of this year’s event.”

The Afro Break movement has steadily grown into one of Africa’s leading platforms for breaking, connecting communities across borders while creating opportunities for dancers to compete, learn, and exchange knowledge.

According to the championship’s founder, the regional qualifiers represent something much larger than a competition—they are a celebration of unity and the shared future of African hip-hop culture.

“This collaboration with partners across East Africa is not just about organizing an event—it is a testament to what we celebrate as a hip-hop community. Last year marked the beginning of this journey, and I am excited to continue building with everyone across East Africa. I’m looking forward to discovering new talent, seeing the region represented strongly at the continental finals in Accra, and sharing the Roots documentary with the Ugandan community. Having the film screened here will make this year’s gathering even more special.”

— B-Boy Lyrics, Founder, Afro Break Championships

As breaking continues to gain momentum across Africa, events like the Afro Break East Africa Qualifiers are becoming important platforms for identifying talent, strengthening regional networks, and preserving the values of hip-hop culture through competition, education, and community.

The champion of the East Africa Qualifiers will earn the honor of representing the region at the Afro Break Continental Championships in Accra, joining some of the continent’s finest breakers in the quest for the African title.

Whether you are a breaker, B-Girl, all-style dancer, coach, parent, or simply a lover of hip-hop culture, Kampala will be the place to experience East Africa’s breaking community at its very best.
