As we step into the festive season, we at SKillz pause with deep gratitude and pride to reflect on what has truly been a remarkable year. What a season it has been. What a journey it has been. From the first beat of the year to the final echoes of the dance floor, 2024–2025 has reminded us why movement, community, and collaboration remain at the heart of Africa’s dance culture.
Our year began powerfully in February, when we officially opened the dance season with the Afro Break Uganda Qualifiers. This moment was more than a competition—it was a statement. Thanks to our esteemed friend and partner in Kenya, Bboy Drift, and the forward-thinking leadership of Afro Break Concepts through Bboy Lyrics, a crucial conversation turned into action. Uganda earned its rightful place on the Afro Break map, affirming that African breaking excellence grows strongest when borders are treated not as barriers, but as bridges. This pan-African collaboration reflected a larger truth: Africa’s dance future lies in shared platforms, regional trust, and collective ownership of our stories.

Shortly after, we officially announced Dance Nexus, a bold and intentional step toward structuring how dance ecosystems grow, connect, and sustain themselves. Dance Nexus was conceived as more than a program—it is a framework for collaboration, knowledge exchange, artist mobility, and long-term cultural infrastructure. Under the spirit of Collab Sasa, SKillz and Dance Nexus came together to support grassroots and community-driven platforms that keep dance culture alive at its roots.
This collaboration saw us stand behind impactful initiatives such as The Local Get Down Battles, a raw and authentic space for dancers to test skill, character, and creativity, and the Floor Motion KWO – Gulu Edition, which carried breaking culture deep into Northern Uganda. The Gulu edition stood out as a powerful moment of regional inclusion—bringing youth, heritage, and urban dance into dialogue, and reaffirming that talent lives everywhere when given space to breathe.

As the year unfolded, we also marked a new chapter with our first event under BODA Studios. This milestone represented our growing commitment to dance film, storytelling, and visual documentation—capturing movement not just as performance, but as memory, identity, and archive.
All roads then led us to the celebration and vision of the 2025 SKillz Dance Festival. This upcoming edition stands as both a culmination and a new beginning—bringing together competitions, workshops, conversations, and creative exchange across disciplines and borders. SKillz 2025 is not only about showcasing excellence; it is about shaping futures, strengthening networks, and reaffirming dance as a tool for youth empowerment, cultural diplomacy, and creative economies.

None of this would be possible without the village that continues to walk this journey with us. We extend heartfelt thanks and respect to all our partners, collaborators, and friends who have stood with us across the years and through every step of this season. Special shout-outs go to Authentic Voices Africa, Afro Break Concepts, Battlezone Kenya, Dance Mtaani, Goma Dance Fest, Kigali Breaking Festival, The Floor Motion Breaking Cypher, The Local Get Down Battles, Sosolya Undungu Family, Switch Africa, EONez, Vijana Up, HipHop Seeds, East Africa Arts, Yamasen Japanese Restaurant, IGC Fashion, and many others who continue to believe, contribute, and build with us.
And to you—the dancers, supporters, audiences, volunteers, and believers—thank you for being part of this journey. As we celebrate this festive season, we do so know that the work continues, the vision expands, and the dance goes on.
From all of us at SKillz: thank you for an unforgettable year, and here’s to an even stronger, more connected season ahead.
